August Puig was seventeen when his paintings, shown at Els Blaus de Sarrià in 1946, became the first wholly abstract works by a Spanish artist. A scholarship took him to Paris. His refusal to exhibit under Franco kept him an outsider at home while he showed across Europe and the Americas, from the Tate Gallery’s 1962 survey of modern Spanish painting to the 1977 São Paulo Biennale.
He spent his last two decades in Monells, in the Empordà, where he died in 1999.
